On January 18, 2018, Allscripts Healthcare Solutions, Inc. suffered a ransomware attack in their Raleigh and Charlotte data centers.  The attack prevented health providers who use Allscripts’ Professional EHR and electronic prescription products from conducting their routine business.

What is Ransomware?

Ransomware is a subset of malware in which the data on a victim’s computer, or network, is locked, typically by encryption, and where payment is demanded as a condition of providing the decryption key to unlock the encrypted data and once again make that data available to the victim. Ransomware attacks render the data stored within a computer network or individual computer both unreadable and completely inaccessible to the company or computer user.

What Happened in the Allscripts Ransomware Attack?

Beginning on or about January 18, 2018, a strain of ransomware known as “SamSam” attacked, compromised, and crippled Allscripts’ data centers in Raleigh and Charlotte, North Carolina. Health providers using Allscripts Profession EHR could not access patient records or electronically prescribe medications. Unable to access this vitally important information, providers were forced to cancel scheduled appointments.
